CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Reuters) – Xander Schauffele dished out the brutal truth regarding the menu for the dinner he will host later on Tuesday for past winners of the PGA Championship: he had very little input.
Schauffele earned the right to select what is served for the champions dinner at Quail Hollow Club this year by virtue of his 2024 PGA Championship win at Valhalla but decided to leave most of the decisions, apart from the cigars, up to the chefs.
“The only thing I said was sort of steak — and I didn’t even look at the menu, to be completely honest. I just trusted what they had. I knew they’d do a good job,” Schauffele said in his pre-tournament news conference.
Schauffele and past PGA Championship winners will be served a selection of smoked goat cheese dates, pickled watermelon, clams casino shooters and steak and blue cheese crostini for appetizers.
For the main course, those in attendance will feast on Wagyu NY strip steak with blackened jumbo shrimp, whipped sweet potato and a bourbon bone marrow reduction.
The meal will conclude with two dessert options: banana split and strawberry shortcake.
“I saw a lot of blue cheese on there. I think we’re kind of tweaking it a little bit, from the last of my knowledge, or making it a little bit more customised; you can have some on or not because it’s sort of a really strong, you either like it or you don’t thing,” said Schauffele.
“My thought was I wanted everyone to enjoy the meal and have a nice time. The cigars, apparently there will be someone rolling cigars tonight. Maybe I might tuck some for later. We’ll see if I smoke some tonight.”
