PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Portage city council swore in recently elected members and said goodbye to one council member who has held his seat for well over two decades.
Mayor Patricia Randall, and Vic Ledbetter and Jihan Young were all sworn in for new terms and first timer Kathleen Olmstead also took the oath for a four-year term.
Most of the meeting was consumed by tributes to outgoing councilmember Terry Urban, who failed to win reelection.
Three former councilmembers, Margaret O’Brien, Lorie Knapp, and Claudette Ried returned to assure Urban that there is life after political office.
A resolution was approved, Urban was given the flags that flew over Portage City Hall on his birthday, and Mayor Randall announced a special honor.
Urban said he has been around nearly 40 years in various voluntary positions.
He says he plans to continue in whatever capacity he can.
Mayor Randall noted that this new council has already made history.
The council also reelected Jim Pearson to serve again as Mayor Pro Tem.
