KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – For the first time, the Portage city council has a majority of women running the show.
That board is not unique.
The Kalamazoo County commission has 5 women and 4 men.
The Kalamazoo city commission is close with 3 females and 4 males, and the Kalamazoo Public Schools board is entirely female, not a guy in the bunch.
This year many of those women have organized to provide Thanksgiving dinner to Kalamazoo’s poorest families.
County commissioner Monteze Morales says they are taking financial donations, that’s the quickest way to make this work, but they will also need help close to the holiday.
She says they are doing their best to make sure everyone gets to eat.
With ongoing uncertainty surrounding SNAP benefits, many families are struggling to put a Thanksgiving meal on the table.
County commissioner Tami Rey says “No one in our community should have to worry about where their next meal is coming from, especially during the holidays.”
Their goal is to raise enough money to feed 200 families, that’s about $10,000.
