KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Plans for a major housing development in Pavilion Township will be up for public discussion tomorrow night.
Pavilion developers are asking to use some tax dollars to finance the plan.
Kalamazoo County has been asked to declare the 175-acre site a brownfield, to qualify it for tax incentives to subsidize 10% of the units for residents who can’t afford the $400,000 market rate.
Joe Agostinelli with Michigan Growth Advisors says that’s what it costs to build a “starter” home these days.
County Brownfield Redevelopment director Macy Rose Walters says it takes incentive plans like this to create new housing.
County board vice chair John Taylor says studies show all income brackets need housing right now.
The county board is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the brownfield designation before taking a vote on the request during their 6:30 p.m. regular meeting Tuesday evening.
