KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – It’s March Madness, the perfect time to consider plans for a new youth tournament center in the Kalamazoo area.
County commissioners will be asked to approve an unusual vote to fund the sprawling new youth sports complex.
Under a special state program, specifically requested by Kalamazoo officials, the owners of large local hotels would be asked to vote whether they are willing to impose a 4% fee on their customers, to fund construction.
Commissioners will hold a public hearing, before taking their vote, but they have already heard from a lot of parents, business owners and young athletes who support the idea, at previous meetings.
Supporters include Lindsay Randolph, a spokesperson for Delta Hotel by Marriott.
Discover Kalamazoo director Jane Ghosh told commissioners they have crunched all the numbers and so have consultants and financial experts.
If the backers of the proposal get a thumbs up from the Kalamazoo County board, the next step is to hold the vote.
