KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Construction will begin on a new Northside housing complex for seniors this month in Kalamazoo, but it hasn’t been easy, and it’s coming down to the wire.
Kalamazoo city commissioners had to meet in a special session last night to pre-approve a million-dollar ARPA loan they approved two years ago, because much of the plan had changed in the interim.
City Planner Sherilynn Parsons said delays can happen, as “low income housing tax credit projects are complicated.”
Mayor Dave Anderson says it’s called a “capital stack,” a financial plan that requires multiple sources, can take years to secure, and can be a full-time job to manage.
Anderson says the housing project was organized by Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
The project will offer 70 subsidized units to seniors, most of whom are on fixed incomes.
Closing on the Mt. Zion project is next Monday before the city commission meeting. That was the reason for the special session.
