KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County’s proposed transitional homeless shelter now has a name.
County Housing Director Mary Balkema updated the county board on progress for the conversion of the Country Inn and Suites on Kilgore Road into the area’s first shelter designed to take in whole families.
It was revealed that the hotel will remain operational for the next couple of months, and the conversion won’t begin until June 1st. That will give them time to do the engineering and design work and obtain permits.
They will need to upgrade several facilities, including the kitchen, before it opens.
Balkema says they are also creating a website for the facility to keep the public up to date on the progress.
Interested parties have until April 21st to submit bids to manage the new 80 room transitional shelter.
