KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – West Michigan could see more severe weather later today, like the storms that blew through a few days ago, killing three children in Climax Township and resulting in nine tornadoes across the state.
The weather system could bring strong winds, hail, flooding and potential tornadoes, this afternoon and evening.
Kalamazoo County Administrator Kevin Catlin says they are ready.
Paramedic Abby Wheeler, who is also a county commissioner, was on the ambulance crew that rolled up to Sunday’s fatalities, when two-and-four-year-old siblings and their 11-year-old cousin from Branch County were killed by a falling tree that struck their family’s van.
Kalamazoo County Emergency Management Director Brandi Janes says we should all make sure our phones are charged, stay indoors if you can, don’t drive through flooded roads, identify a shelter location, secure outdoor items and keep a battery-operated flashlight and radio handy.
Janes adds “As we approach the one-year anniversary of the May 7 tornado, it’s a powerful reminder to stay weather-aware. While we can’t control the storms, we can take steps to keep ourselves and each other as safe as possible: by having multiple ways to receive alerts, reviewing emergency plans, and checking in on neighbors.”
