KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo’s poorer residents could soon have their medical debts paid by a national non-profit.
County officials have been working with the organization, now called “Undue Medical Debt,” which pays pennies on the dollar to have those bills forgiven.
Recipients must earn four-times below the federal poverty level or owe more than 5% of their annual income in medical bills.
County Administrator Kevin Catlin says residents don’t need to apply as the non-profit has been working with area hospitals to identify qualifying participants.
Catlin says Kalamazoo County and the city of Kalamazoo have both contributed to the New York-based non-profit to make the debt forgiveness possible.
He says they are setting up a webpage on the county website and preparing for the launch of the program.
