KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County is moving forward with a grant from the federal Environmental Protection Agency to improve local homes, even though the Trump administration may cut the funding.
Kalamazoo city commissioners received a presentation on the $18.9-million Community Change Grant, which will focus on home repairs and upgrades in the city’s 4 targeted neighborhoods: Eastside, Northside, Edison and Douglas.
Climate Sustainability Coordinator Taylor Van Winkle says they have already started hiring staff, and so far, some bills have been paid from that grant.
Like so many of the Trump spending cuts, Van Winkle says lawsuits have been filed.
Van Winkle says the would make about 300 homes energy efficient, make upgrades to the Community Centers and train the carpenters, electricians and other skilled tradesmen to do the work over the next three years.
They will begin seeking qualified homeowners later this spring, that is if the money doesn’t get yanked away, as some local officials fear might still happen.
