AUDIO: Saturday school over for KPS students

KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Saturday school in Kalamazoo has ended for the few hundred elementary and middle school students assigned to take the extra sessions in math and reading.

This year, Kalamazoo Public Schools 8th graders, who needed extra help, were added to the program, to prepare them for the jump to high school, and the program could be expanded further. in the future.

That’s basically because it works.

Dr. Micole Dyson says they tested students in the two subjects both before and after the five Saturday sessions, and most students came out smarter.

Trustee Jennie Hill says it’s another way they are innovating to bolster student achievement.

As an extra incentive, students who participated will get a field trip.

Elementary students are going to Craig’s Cruisers, and the 8th graders are going to Michigan Adventure. Those will also be Saturday sessions.
