LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Life in prison without parole sentences for 19-and-20-year-olds convicted of murder are now banned in Michigan.
The state Supreme Court ruled those sentences are “cruel and unusual punishment” and the decision follows one made in 2022 for 18-year-olds.
The opinion means there will be nearly 600 inmates who will be resentenced.
Anyone 18 and older who was convicted of first-degree murder was automatically sentenced to life in prison without parole before the changes.
