PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Residents who survived last year’s tornado in Portage are now saying they face new threats.
Two residents complained to the Portage City Council that damaged forests are now a hazard to the neighborhood, one complaining about the potential for wildfires and the other because a pack of coyotes has moved in.
City Manager Pat McGinnis says they have set aside $150,000 from state disaster relief funds for tree replacement, but it won’t be nearly enough.
The city of Portage will be getting some help replacing trees from Tony the Tiger and Re-Leaf Michigan, who will be distributing 350 trees this weekend.
The Arbor Day Foundation and Kellogg’s is helping to fund the giveaway this Friday.
Arborist Stuart Bassett speaks for the group.
All of the trees have already been spoken for.
There are rumors that Tony the Tiger may make a personal appearance at the event.
National Arbor Day is a week from Friday.
