KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is hopeful that an ordinance change could finally derail the ‘X-train’ in Kalamazoo, or at least slow it down.
The lawless mobile parties have been a dangerous nuisance on the north side for years, and Chief Dave Boysen says most attempts to end it have failed.
Last year they began impounding cars, a process that involved getting a court order, and he says it had an impact when word got around.
He says they seized about three-dozen cars last year.
Boysen says the proposed ordinance amendment will give Public Safety officers the authority to impound cars without going through a judge.
City commissioners accepted it for first reading this week and will likely pass it at their next meeting in three weeks.
