WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, announced on Wednesday he would retire at the end of his term after 44 years in Congress.
“The decision of whether to run for re-election has not been easy. I truly love the job of being a United States Senator,” Durbin, 80, wrote, on social media.
“But in my heart, I know it’s time to pass the torch.”
Durbin represents Illinois, a solidly Democratic state. His retirement is expected to set off a competitive race for a rare Senate vacancy there.
Durbin’s current term ends in January 2027.
