PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The USTA and ACEing Autism welcomed 87 tennis players of varied abilities to the Portage YMCA this past Sunday for “an impactful afternoon of inclusive tennis.”
Among the 87 were 16 people with autism, four wheelchair tennis players, one standing adaptive athlete, and one player with a limb difference.
The other 65 players were community members and families, and many of them were new to the sport.
Highlights of the day included demonstrations of wheelchair tennis with additional sports chairs available; clinic activities for kids; drills for everyone using ball machines; medals and t-shirts for everyone; and snacks, beverages, and “abundant” volunteer assistance.
“This event showcased the essence of inclusive tennis, where everyone, regardless of their ability or experience, has the opportunity to participate and feel welcomed,” stated Nancy Martin, Program Director, ACEing Autism Kalamazoo. “It was moving to witness so many individuals unite to foster connection, joy, and community.” Martin manages the ACEing Autism clinic held at the Kalamazoo YMCA.
A heartfelt thank you to all volunteers, supporters, and families who made this event successful.
