KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County board has voted to expand the safety zone around the KL Avenue landfill as a plume of toxic chemicals continues to expand in groundwater.
Most of the homeowners in the extended zone in western Oshtemo Township have already been provided with city water, with no charge for the hook ups.
Commissioners held a public hearing on the plan, but only one woman stood up to complain. Michelle Vanderoest says she would like to have the freedom to choose.
The pipes may be free, but the water won’t be and she says times are tough.
“I have 6 little kids, we use our water so much for all the laundry, baths, a little hobby farm I manage. The freedom to use it is very important to me.”
She says she just doesn’t feel the water is that toxic and she has filters on the faucets she uses for drinking and cooking.
The measure approved by the county means she won’t be permitted to use well water, for her and her family’s safety.
