KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A shooting at a nuisance party on Kalamazoo’s north side this weekend is just one reason why city commissioners have approved an ordinance amendment to allow Kalamazoo Public Safety to impound the cars of anyone caught repeatedly participating in the so-called X-Trains.
Chief Dave Boysen says the impoundments have had the biggest deterrent effect, of all the strategies they have tried over the years.
Violators will first be notified by letter that their car is subject to seizure, if they are seen at another mobile nuisance party.
He says this past weekend, they added another 129 cars to the list.
Boysen says making it easier for officers to seize cars during and after the events should make it an even larger deterrent.
He says 17% of the participants rent cars for the events, but they might find it more difficult to do so in the future.
A car on the list could be seized if they are pulled over for any reason, or if flagged by one of the city’s license plate readers, and multiple repeat offenders could find officers on their doorstep with a warrant to haul their car away.
