KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The one-year delay of the conversion of Kalamazoo Avenue from one way to two way means there will be fewer orange cones downtown this construction season, but that does not mean it will be cone free.
Kalamazoo Utilities Director James Baker unveiled details on a project that will close Westnedge Avenue between Kalamazoo and Michigan avenues from late June of this year through June of next year.
“It’s possible that we might have to come back and amend this schedule due to market conditions and reality of what we’ve got but right now we’re making some assumptions,” says Baker.
Southbound traffic on Westnedge Avenue will be detoured down Michi-Kal, to connect with Michigan Avenue.
Baker says they will be monitoring it to make sure it can handle the flow.
“The first day the detour is enacted is usually one of our most difficult days as we learn from it and as drivers learn from it as well, and then we make adjustments.”
He says they will be installing large water mains, providing connections for the new event center, replacing some pipes that date back nearly 100 years, and also doing work on Arcadia Creek, which flows under Westnedge.
Access to the Catholic Diocese will be limited to Michigan Avenue.
