KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The former site of Brite Eyes Brewing on South Burdick Street in Kalamazoo could be serving up another refreshing beverage in a few years.
The city of Kalamazoo has purchased the now vacant property and the adjacent parking lot to expand their water pumping field near the Central Water Treatment plant on Crosstown Parkway.
Utilities director James Baker says it’s part of a much larger effort to consolidate the number of treatment plants operated by the regional utility by approximately half.
He says they will be demolishing the small business and most of the new infrastructure will be built underground when work gets underway in 2028.
The purchase price for the property was $335,000.
City commissioners approved the purchase on Monday.
Kalamazoo has one of the largest water utilities in the state that relies largely on groundwater, which some call the state’s 6th Great Lake. Most other large systems either rely on one of the big lakes or surface water.
