KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Specially designed cameras primarily used to catch traffic violaters have helped police identify a suspect vehicle in a Friday morning shooting in Kalamazoo.
Just after 9:00 a.m., officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public
Safety (KDPS) responded to reports of gunfire in the 1100 block of Hays Park Avenue. Shortly afterward, KDPS was notified that a gunshot victim had arrived at a local hospital by private
vehicle.
The victim, a 24-year-old male Kalamazoo resident, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and
underwent emergency surgery. He remains in critical but stable condition.
A preliminary investigation indicates that a physical altercation occurred between the victim and the suspect. During the altercation, the suspect obtained a handgun and shot the victim.
The suspect has not yet been identified and remains at large. He is described as a Black male in his early 20s,
with a slender build and dreadlocked hair.
Flock cameras in the area played a key role in identifying the suspect vehicle. As a result, two individuals have been arrested in connection with the shooting:
• An 18-year-old male Kalamazoo resident was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon and aiding and abetting a felony.
• A 29-year-old male Kalamazoo resident was arrested on outstanding warrants and charged as an accessory after the fact to a felony.
Both individuals were booked into the Kalamazoo County Jail and are awaiting arraignment.
Additionally, a search warrant related to the shooting was executed in the 1500 block of Kickapoo Court using members from the Kalamazoo County Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team.
Evidence connected to the shooting was recovered during the search.
