KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Ever wonder what happens to the water that goes down the drain? This is Public Services Week in Kalamazoo and it’s your chance to find out.
Residents both inside and outside the city will have a chance to tour the facilities.
Utilities director James Baker says they will be offering tours of the Harrison Street Water Reclamation plant on Tuesday.
The facility has undergone some major changes as the city commission has put an emphasis on reducing odors emanating from the plant.
You can come out and see what those higher water and sewer rates are paying for.
Two days later they will be opening the Stockbridge Public Works facility to the public.
That’s where they park and service their road repairs, snow plowing and tree maintenance operations.
Tours and activities will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 pm both days.
The water and wastewater utility costs as much to operate annually as the rest of the city of Kalamazoo and even more to maintain, but it covers a much larger area, reaching out into the rest of the metropolitan area and into the townships.
