LANSING, MI (WTVB)- Michigan lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow police to conduct roadside saliva tests on drivers suspected of drugged driving.
Supporters say the move could help prevent crashes and save lives by offering a quicker way to detect drug impairment. But a 2019 pilot program raised concerns about the technology’s accuracy, showing an eleven-percent error rate and limited use.
Civil liberties advocates, including the ACLU, warn the tests could lead to false results and raise privacy concerns, particularly over how DNA data might be stored. The bill must pass the Senate and be signed by the governor before becoming law.
