PAW PAW, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – What was once a plain brick wall at Paw Paw High School has now been transformed into an 1,800 square foot mural painted by Detroit-based artist Marlo Broughton and students from the high school.
The original idea for a mural was conceived by Paw Paw High School Art Teacher Sarah Bentley and honors the life of her teenage son, who lost his battle with mental health last fall. School officials say the goal of the mural was to create a positive, inspiring message that not only welcomed students but also sparked real conversations about mental health struggles.
With an initial goal of raising $5000 to cover project expenses, community members, businesses, and nonprofits have already contributed over $4200 to the project.
To celebrate the completion of the mural, students recently nominated teachers, administrators, and even Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to accept an ice bucket challenge to increase mental health awareness. They are asking the community to grab a bucket, some ice, and a friend, record themselves getting doused with ice water, then posting the video on social media with the tags @uscmind and @speakyour_mind.
A secure fundraising page has also been created on the Paw Paw Public School district’s website,
