PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The City of Portage broke ground Thursday on the new Stanwood Crossings subdivision, a $18.7 million project designed to provide affordable housing in the city.
Plans call for 42 single-family homes with up to three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The Portage City Council has approved the construction of the first 12 homes in the development.
City Manager Pat McGinnis told our Ken Lanphear this week.
Residents purchase their homes and lease the land from the Portage Community Land Trust, allowing for increased affordability from not having to purchase the land the home is on and the original home prices are discounted from the actual construction cost.
Money for the project is provided through a number of sources, including $3 million from a Kalamazoo County Homes for All Grant, $1 million from a Congressional Community Project Funding grant for infrastructure and site prep, and $1 million from the City of Portage Capital Improvement Program.
