KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Long-delayed efforts to install two new public restrooms downtown could move forward tonight, if Kalamazoo city commissioners approve the purchase of a Portland loo.
That’s a durable, low-maintenance, vandal-resistant one stall bathroom that would be open 24/7, designed by the city of Portland, Oregon and bearing their name.
City Manager Jim Ritsema says they are still trying to work out where to install it.
He told commissioners in February they have one restroom budgeted, and are “working with the downtown DDA and DEGA boards as partners for cleaning and maintaining wherever that restroom is located.”
It’s been an issue ever since the city decriminalized its ordinance on public urination last year, causing a stink.
If city commissioners give a thumbs up on the purchase of the $200,000 bathroom tonight, Ritsema says it could take 16 to 18 weeks to arrive, and 37 months before installation would be complete if they find a location.
