KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A suspect has been taken into custody and charged with murder in the shooting death of another man last week in Kalamazoo.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says 28-year-old Anthony Shawn-Tyrone Thomas was arrested Sunday and arraigned Monday on Open Murder, Felony Firearm, Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, and Carrying a Concealed Weapon charges. Bond was denied.
Officers responded just after 1:30 a.m. May 28 to the area of Riverview Drive and East Paterson Street after a KDPS officer was flagged down regarding a possible shooting. Additional 911 calls confirmed a gunfire incident in the area.
When they arrived, officers found 42-year-old Michael Richard Powers suffering from gunshot wounds to the head and abdomen. CPR was initiated and Powers was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 3:16 a.m.
No further have been released on the shooting.
