AUGUSTA, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Officials with the Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center in Augusta say they have kicked off the public portion of a $2.6 million capital campaign to construct a dedicated therapy arena.
Cheff is North America’s first therapeutic riding center built specifically for individuals with special needs. The “Raise the Roof” capital campaign has already raised over $2.1 million toward its goal. Cheff Center leadership how hope the community can help them raise the rest.
Since opening in 1969, Cheff has served individuals facing physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges. The organization currently serves more than 600 clients annually, ranging in age from 3 to 83, with support from over 190 volunteers.
Clients represent more than 42 different primary diagnoses, including autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, PTSD, depression, and anxiety disorders.
“This critical next step will allow us to not only continue meeting the changing needs of our community, but further a legacy of compassion, opportunity, and progress that will serve generations to come,” said Tara East, Executive Director of Cheff Center, who has led the organization since 2006.
The new 2,132-square-foot arena will feature a smaller, more private space with its own entrance, a dedicated facility for mental health offerings during regular program hours, expanded hippotherapy capacity, potentially including occupational and speech therapy, and allow for enhanced partnerships with K-12 schools and local universities for Equine Assisted Learning.
The Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center is located at 8450 N 43rd Street, Augusta.
