KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County Prosecuting Attorney has authorized criminal charges against a 35-year-old Kalamazoo woman in the shooting of her three-year-old child.
Ashley Howard was arraigned Friday in Kalamazoo County District Court on one count of violating Michigan’s Safe Storage of Firearms Act causing serious impairment of a bodily function, which is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says two children were left alone in a vehicle parked outside a residence May 3, 2025.
Howard’s 3-year-old accessed a weapon stored in the center console of the vehicle and accidentally shot herself while her parents were away.
A probable cause conference in the case is set for Tuesday, June 17.
