PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony will be held Thursday for the newest push by the City of Portage to increase housing availability and affordability.
Elected officials, City of Portage and Michigan State Housing Development Authority representatives, and project developers will take part in the ceremonial first dig for Oakland Commons and Creekside Commons. The units are being built by Allen Edwin Homes.
City officials say these projects represent a total of 104 housing units with a combined investment of more than $35 million, and are designed to help meet the city’s urgent need for affordable housing, with 20% of the units reserved for workforce housing.
The new neighborhood is a 12.6-acre site at 9581 Oakland Drive, just north of the Oakland Drive and Shaver Road intersection and south of where Oakland Drive intersects with Vanderbilt Avenue. It includes a mix of multi- and single-family homes.
