KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The city of Kalamazoo has hired David Marquardt as their new deputy city manager.
He comes to Kalamazoo from Grand Rapids, where he has been their Parks and Recreation Department director since 2015 and brings extensive experience in municipal leadership and public service.
Marquardt will be responsible for parks and recreation, public services, and communications.
He will also oversee comprehensive city communication matters and projects while managing media relations and promoting efforts with the city’s communications team.
Marquardt managed a $20 million annual budget and led multiple divisions in the Parks and Recreation Department, including finance and administration, operations, planning and capital projects, and youth development. He oversaw over 300 employees.
Grand Rapids City Manager Mark Washington says they will work on a transition plan for interim leadership before Marquardt leaves the job on July 4.
Marquardt will start with the city of Kalamazoo on July 7.
He has a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Colorado-Denver and earned a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
