PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – An eight-month-old was unharmed after the vehicle they were in was stolen in Portage Tuesday morning.
At approximately 10:45 a.m., Portage Department of Public Safety police officers were sent to the 7000 block of Green Forest Drive for a report that
a vehicle had just been stolen with a baby inside. Officers quickly
disseminated information about the child and description of the vehicle to area law enforcement agencies.
At approximately 11:45 a.m., a Kalamazoo Departmeny of Public Safety Officer spotted the vehicle backed into a driveway in the 600 block of Oak Street with the infant
still inside. A few minutes later, a female suspect was located and taken into custody at a nearby motel.
Life EMS personnel were summoned to the scene to evaluate the child,
who appeared to be unharmed.
Investigators learned the suspect, a 25-year-old Kalamazoo woman, had been in the Green Forest home the night prior visiting a third party, but was believed to have left the residence sometime during the overnight hours.
Police say her motivation for removing the child from the home remains under investigation.
The suspect was transported to the Kalamazoo County Jail where she’ll be held until the case can be reviewed by the Kalamazoo Prosecutor’s Office.
The Portage Department of Public Safety says the safe return of the child was made possible through the swift and coordinated efforts of multiple agencies, including the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety,
Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Kalamazoo County Dispatch Authority, and Life EMS Ambulance.
