KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo city commissioners have now approved plans to run all their utilities into the new event center site at the same time that the private developers are doing their work under Westnedge Avenue, and split the costs.
Utilities Director James Baker says it will reduce street closures and save city taxpayers money.
He says that project, which will close Westnedge between Michigan and Kalamazoo avenues, is now tentatively set to begin on July 7th.
It was part of a $100-million package of water improvements that will also extend city water out to PFAS contaminated areas in Richland Township, replace lead lines in the Edison Neighborhood, and rebuild Water Treatment Station 5 and consolidate it with Station 9, parts of which 80 to 110 years old.
It’s one of the big reasons water bills are up this year, but Baker they originally estimated it would cost $110-million. They brought it in $10-million under budget, and with an additional $20 million dollar PFAS grant.
The package of proposals were approved unanimously Monday night.
