KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Consumers Energy says it has reached the halfway mark of a 12-mile project to replace and upgrade underground pipelines that serve over 2,000 homes and businesses in Kalamazoo.
The utility says it is part of ongoing work to modernize its natural gas system, including some pipeline that dates back to the early 1900s.
Crews started work in February in an area that’s roughly bordered on the north and south by Stockbridge and Alcott avenues, and on the west and east by Portage and Fulford streets. They are replacing existing cast iron pipeline with plastic that Consumers says can last for decades longer and reduce methane emissions. The project should be finished in October 2025.
Consumers Energy currently provides natural gas to over 97,000 homes and businesses in Kalamazoo County.
The work is part of Consumer Energy’s Natural Gas Delivery Plan, they say ensuring their system remains safe in all weather while costing the typical household less than $3 a day.
