KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Four weekends into the City of Kalamazoo’s updated Mobile Nuisance Party ordinance, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says it is seeing steady progress in reducing reckless driving, dangerous stunts, and disruptive vehicle-related behavior on city streets.
Since the ordinance took effect, KDPS officials says they have seen a consistent decline in the parties each weekend. While incidents began to resurface this past Friday near Mable Street and North Westnedge Avenue, they say officers on scene quickly documented violations and captured license plate information during a high-traffic evening.
With support from Real Time Crime Center cadets and officers reviewing body-worn camera and drone footage, KDPS has been able to identify involved vehicles and issue formal warning letters to those vehicle owners.
The city says the letters serve as official notice under the ordinance and carry a six-month window during which a repeat violation could result in the impoundment of the vehicle.
In the four weekends of the program, 267 vehicles have been identified as involved in Mobile Nuisance Party activity, 139 warning letters have been issued, and one vehicle has been impounded under due to repeated violations
“We’re encouraged by the downward trend we’re seeing,” said Captain Scott VanderEnde. “Our officers have been consistent and diligent in addressing this issue, and that commitment is being supported by the City Commission, City Manager’s Office, and the Kalamazoo community.”
KDPS officials say they will continue their focused effort to deter mobile nuisance activity and ensure the safety of Kalamazoo’s neighborhoods.
