PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Today will be the last official day on the job for Portage Public Schools superintendent Mark Bielang after a dozen years in the post.
He is retiring and told the Portage city council earlier this month that from now on every day is a Saturday.
“One of the most liberating feelings in life is taking the training wheels off your bike and I’d like to think that retirement is kind of that same thing, so I’m looking forward to taking off my school wheels and going on into riding without school in my life.”
Bielang, who says he is a proud Bronco with two degrees from Western Michigan University, says he is also proud of all the things he has been able to accomplish.
“I can’t think of a better place that I’d rather finish my career than Portage, it’s just been it’s been a great run.”
The school board didn’t have to go far to find his replacement. Current assistant superintendent for operations Johnny Edwards moves over to the big office tomorrow.
He is a former director of secondary education at Kalamazoo Public Schools.
This article has been edited to show Johnny Edwards’ former position at Kalamazoo Public Schools was director of secondary education, not assistant superintendent.
