KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Russ Kavalhuna is Western Michigan University’s tenth president and took over yesterday from former president Edward Montgomery.
It was Kavalhuna’s third first day at WMU as he earned a bachelor’s degree from the school in aviation science and worked at WMU in flight operations at the College of Aviation before becoming Henry Ford College president.
He called it a “pinch me” moment to take the helm in Kalamazoo, and has a goal of being a top three public university in Michigan.
Kavalhuna says WMU needs to be known for being centered around student services, needs to compete nationally for “innovation of ideas,” and needs to be “the place that a region needs both in its economic needs, social needs through its government and K-12 needs.”
