KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The deadline for applications for Kalamazoo’s unique county housing millage is Thursday, and the county board is gearing up to spend it.
Tuesday, they decided to appoint an ad hoc committee to go through the volumes of information that have to be reviewed to pick the winners.
In the past, the full board did the screening, but commissioner Dale Deleeuw says that kind of work takes special dedication and knowledge.
Commissioner Monteze Morales would like to make affordability a higher priority this year, especially for seniors.
Board chair Jen Strebs says the greatest need is for homes for people in the bottom half of the income scale.
Finding affordable housing is a problem everywhere, and for every income level, but Kalamazoo County is still the only Michigan county to approve a special milage to help alleviate the problem.
