KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – As commuters get back to work today, they may need to detour to get downtown if they use North Westnedge Avenue.
Two blocks of Westnedge between Kalamazoo and Michigan avenues will be closed entirely to allow water, sewer, storm drainage and a new underground route for Arcadia Creek to be installed, as work on the event center continues.
Drivers will be detoured down MichiKal St. to get back to Michigan Avenue.
City commissioner Chris Praedel was initially skeptical that this alternate route would work.
Utilities director Jim Baker says signs will be placed on North Westnedge Avenue and Kalamazoo Avenue warning drivers to get into the left lane if they are going west and the right lane if they are headed south.
Baker says there could be some traffic delays in the beginning until they can adjust light timing to optimize the flow.
The detour will be needed until August 15th according to the city’s website.
Traffic on Westnedge is already reduced to one lane through the Vine neighborhood. If your plan is to get to the other side of the downtown, an alternative route may be your best option
