KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Democratic state Senator Sean McCann of Kalamazoo will be seeking higher office next year, jumping into the 4th District Congressional race.
McCann says he has a proven record of serving up what the Republican majority in Washington is taking away, lower costs and adequate healthcare coverage.
He will be vying for the seat now held by Republican Bill Huizenga of Zeeland and was held for a very long time before that by Republican Fred Upton of St. Joseph.
Huizenga has already begun holding fundraisers for a run for the U.S. Senate next year, and that could make it a wide-open race for the 4th Congressional seat, giving a Democrat the best chance in years to flip the district.
Democrat Jessica Schwartz of Kalamazoo, who ran against Huizenga the last time and lost says she is up for a second run, and if Huizenga seeks higher office, many others will likely join them.
The Cook Political Report says the 4th is one of three districts in Michigan that could flip from red to blue next year.
