KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County board will waste no time appointing an authority board to start making decisions about the new youth sports facility, to be built on the west side of Kalamazoo.
Commissioners will be presented with a list of 11 nominees at their Tuesday meeting, one each from the county and the city of Kalamazoo along with 9 from Discover Kalamazoo.
That list includes 2 youth sports officials, a representative from Southwest Michigan First, two from Discover Kalamazoo which will be marketing the facility, and three from local hotels.
Discover Kalamazoo’s Jane Ghosh says that’s because hotels will at least initially be footing the bill through a 4% fee on room rates, “because the authority can have representation of the hoteliers around the body and since they are the peers in the sense, that their position can be represented.”
Also on the list is the supervisor of Oshtemo Township because of that community’s proximity to the sports complex.
The motion is on the consent agenda, which means it could pass without discussion.
