KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Community Homeworks in Kalamazoo has been awarded $150,000 by the Consumers Energy Foundation in their 2025 People Award winners.
The Kalamazoo nonprofit will use the money to offer critical home repairs, educational workshops, and a tool library in support of its mission to prevent displacement, preserve homeownership, and ensure homes are safe and dignified.
Executive director Chris Praedel says with the Consumers Energy Foundation’s assistance, they will “be able to directly strengthen our Safe Start Home Repair Program.” He says that program was created with the specific goal of reducing barriers to critical home repairs for families with expectant mothers and young children, which he says are “particularly vulnerable households with health and safety concerns.”
The People Awards from the Consumers Energy Foundation are the second of three signature grant allocations in 2025 totaling $1.5 million. The Foundation awarded the Planet Awards in April, and will present the Prosperity Awards this fall for nonprofits that support economic development.
