LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) To keep up with long-term sustainability of park operations across the state, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is increasing fees for overnight lodging at campsites.
New nightly rates are set to take effect starting Aug. 1.
The adjustment comes as a means to keep pace with fixed costs, like utilities, equipment replacement, and staff.
Increased revenue is expected to allow the state parks system to enhance their visitor experiences to include cleaner parks and restrooms, natural resource stewardship efforts, and upgraded campground amenities.
Adjustments are made based on market analysis that mitigates unfair competition with privately owned campgrounds. Analysis includes other municipal, county, state and private-sector campgrounds in the Midwest and Michigan.
New rates include:
State Park modern and semi-modern campsite, Increase from $4 and $10 per night, depending on location and available amenities
State Park overnight lodging, Rates change to more simplified structure. Rates will range from $60 to $120 per night, with deluxe lodging priced at $160 per night
Modern lodges (i.e., Bedrooms, fully furnished, full bathroom, etc.): Undergoing phased rate increase over next 2 years, which will result in nightly base rate of $236 per night for all locations by 2027. Some rates may vary due to increased occupancy
The DNR is also establishing fees for intermittent camping and equipment storage.
