KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Safety Chief Dave Boysen says they have arrested suspects in the four shootings that took place on the 4th of July.
Boysen says they made an all-out effort to identify the gunmen.
“They were able to make 10 arrests seized 10 firearms sadly most of these were youth aged 15 to 19.”
He says all ten suspects are teens, and being held on high bail. Their immediate concern was to avoid attempts at retribution.
“Since that July 4th weekend our shootings virtually we have gone to zero so it’s very happy about that and hopefully we’ll continue that.”
He says the young suspects had been repeat offenders and had been approached by city programs to try to turn their lives around.
“Talking to their parents and unfortunately there are some people that don’t get the message and that’s where enforcement has to come in but we certainly tried to do the mediation and engagement first.”
Boysen says they weren’t just shootings, but gunfights that left one man dead and seven others wounded.
