KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says earlier this week it executed two search warrants as part of its ongoing investigation into July 4 holiday shootings in the city.
Those shootings happened in the 1300 block of Krom Street at 10:50 p.m. July 4, and in the 1200 block of W. Paterson Street at 3:00 a.m. and the 800 block of Woodward Avenue at 4:00 a.m. July 5.
This past Wednesday a search warrant was executed at an apartment in the
800 block of West Lovell Street, and KDPS says 29-year-old Bernard Murff Jr. was found in possession of a stolen
.45 caliber handgun.
They say Murff Jr., who is currently on federal supervised release for a previous firearm conviction, was arrested and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon by a prohibited person
(two counts), and felony firearm (two counts).
He was arraigned by Judge Alisa L. Parker-Lagrone Thursday and was given a $2,500 personal recognizance bond.
Despite his PR bond, Murff Jr. is being held on a federal probation violation warrant.
Thursday a second search warrant was executed at a business in the
1300 block of N. Westnedge Avenue. The Kalamazoo Metro SWAT Team, KDPS officers, and members of the Southwest Commercial Auto Recovery (SCAR) team assisted in the
warrant execution.
Three individuals were taken into custody on outstanding arrest
warrants. A .40 caliber handgun, ammunition, burglary tools, and a stolen trailer were also recovered at the scene.
KDPS says it continues to investigate and follow leads related to the gun violence.
