KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo city commissioners will be asked tonight to finalize action on a new authority to own and operate a $30 million youth sports facility on the west side.
It’s an intergovernmental effort. The Kalamazoo County board has already signed off on the authority, which will call the shots for the new complex, handle the finances and own the hard-court indoor sports complex.
Jane Ghosh at Discover Kalamazoo, who has spearheaded this project, is anxious to begin planning construction.
“We look forward to working with the authority board to move this project forward as quickly as possible, we’re very excited about it, we think it’s the right thing for our community,” says Ghosh.
A new map showing the location they have chosen in Westgate, and the areas odd geography, shows just how important intergovernmental cooperation is to this project. The site is isolated on a finger of land that extends from a peninsula of Kalamazoo that juts up between Kalamazoo and Oshtemo townships. A representative from Oshtemo will also be on the authority board.
The funding is in place, the county has agreed to bond the project, a site has been picked. Tonight’s action will put the final piece of the puzzle in place.
Now all they have to do is build it.
