KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The city of Kalamazoo has been using a hexagonal antenna attached to a helicopter to map out aquifers under the ground for the city’s water system.
Water program manager Jean Talanda says they have collected data from over 14-hundred acres and planners will be given the information to be used to drill new test wells as they work to modernize and upgrade the system.
She says some of their well fields have big hills, some are in steep areas, and the antenna and helicopter make mapping it much quicker than the old way of doing it on the ground.
Aqua Geo Frameworks geologist and geophysicist Jared Abraham says they know the aquifer is glacial geology that has been mapped and drilled.
City officials expect to get the finalized findings in about eight weeks.
