KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo’s search for a new city manager has just entered its first public phase.
While elected commissioners make big decisions and set the direction for the city, it’s the manager who runs Kalamazoo City Hall on a day-to-day basis.
Picking a replacement for Jim Ritsema, who has been city manager for more than a dozen years, and who retires this fall, may be the most crucial decision this commission makes.
Vice Mayor Jeanne Hess says they have just begun an online public survey, to find out from residents what kind of attributes, skills, and sensibilities they would like to see in their next city manager. Residents will also be able to stop at City Hall and fill one out.
A special City Committee of the Whole meeting has been scheduled for next Monday afternoon to hear more public comment on the process and to get an update from their executive headhunter, Pamela Wideman.
Next Monday’s special session will begin at 5 p.m. at City Hall.
The deadline for survey submissions is August 24th.
The survey can be found at www.kalamazoocity/citymanagersearch
