KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Mosquitoes in Kalamazoo County have been confirmed to be carrying the West Nile virus.
The Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department says their Environmental Health Division found the virus when doing routine surveillance testing.
That means if you weren’t already protecting yourself from mosquitoes, now is the time to start.
Kalamazoo County Administrator Kevin Catlin says seniors are particularly vulnerable to suffering from harsher symptoms that include neurological damage and can be fatal, and should take precautions, including using repellents with DEET, and dressing appropriately.
West Nile virus is delivered by the Culex mosquito, a species that typically hatches this time of the year.
The testing will continue through the end of September, when mosquito populations typically drop off.
Local testing had already found indications this summer that Lyme disease had been discovered in ticks and that a mosquito had tested positive for Jamestown Canyon virus. Anyone of them could ruin your summer.
