KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County officials want to make it clear that Kalamazoo is not a sanctuary county or city.
Sheriff Rick Fuller says they took extra pains this week to transmit that, that they should not be on any list of sanctuary cities.
“My team had direct conversations with ICE officials here in the state of Michigan and advised them that we see no criteria where the county of Kalamazoo meets this, and we would like to be off that list. Kalamazoo County is off that list,” Fuller says.
President Trump has singled out so-called sanctuary cities for federal funding cuts and increased raids.
While protestors called on city commissioners to make that declaration on Monday, county commissioner Monteze Morales says it would be a mistake.
“I’m glad that we are not identified as a sanctuary county because it will put a target on their back. You know I know people mean well, there was some martyrs said like we need this we’re gonna go and we’re gonna address this, and I’m like no.”
Sanctuary cities refuse to cooperate with ICE agents when they come to town and may attempt to obstruct the enforcement of immigration laws.
Local law enforcement policies in Kalamazoo call on officers to do what is required under local and state laws, and nothing more.
